NB Medical Education Foundation Inc. $1.8 million in Scholarships for New Brunswick Medical Students

Celebration August 23, 2018, Imperial Theatre, awarding approximately $300,000 in scholarships

Saint John, New Brunswick: A highly successful unique program once again celebrates its donors and recipients August 23, 2018 at the Imperial Theatre, Saint John, New Brunswick. The New Brunswick Medical Education Foundation has surpassed the $1.8 million dollar mark in scholarship awards as it enters its ninth year. This year’s event will award 40 scholarships to medical students attending an accredited medical school who intend to return to New Brunswick and practice medicine. This year’s award recipients are from every corner of New Brunswick, representing both linguistic communities and attending medical schools across Canada. New Brunswick students will attend Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick, Memorial University, Université de Sherbrooke (Moncton Campus) and Laval University. This wealth of diversity in medical education will help to bring excellence to medical care for all New Brunswick residents.

The donors of these scholarships include corporate gifts from RBC, TD, BMO, BNS, AstraZeneca, Bell Aliant, as well as many local New Brunswick residents who support excellence in medical education. The New Brunswick College of Physicians and Surgeons, the New Brunswick Medical Society, Horizon Health Network, Province of New Brunswick, Sisters of Charity and Knights of Columbus are donors. Additional donors include the Irving Family, McCain Foundation, Dr. Richard J. Currie, Margaret and Wallace McCain Family Foundation, J. T. Clark Family Foundation, and the Friends of Christofor, as well as, members of many prominent New Brunswick families who have donated legacy gifts in the names of friends and family members. These include: David and Faye Huestis, the Walter Flewelling family, Dr. Frank and Audrey Wanamaker, Dr. Hendrik and Wanda Tonning and Dr. Paul and Gayle Sohi families. The Towns of Hampton and Rothesay are recent sponsors of a scholarship.

This year’s event, hosted by the Directors of the New Brunswick Medical Education Foundation and sponsored by AstraZeneca, will include a musical interlude by a local musician, and light refreshments. Victoria Clarke, (Director, Discover Saint John) will act as Master of Ceremonies with the assistance of Christianne Vachon.
