Dr. Sohrab Lutchmedial passed away in November, 2021 at the age of 52. He was a proud father of three, a passionate physician and researcher, and a highly respected Interventional Cardiologist at the Saint John Regional Hospital.

Sohrab served on the board of the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation, as a representative for the Canadian Association of Interventional Cardiologists, and co-founded CoVeR-NB, and IMPART research. He never missed an opportunity to help someone in need, and always made time for those he loved.

The Dr. Sohrab Lutchmedial Legacy Award was created in 2023 as a tribute and testament to his life and extraordinary impact. It will provide approximately $10,000 in tuition relief to its recipient for each year awarded. A return-to-service scholarship, it will also ensure these talented, future health care providers practice in New Brunswick following graduation.

Please consider making a donation to ensure we can offer this award in perpetuity. Your generous support will empower our next generation of health care providers in New Brunswick.

"Dr. Lutchmedial had a passion for knowledge and the healthcare he provided to so many. He loved to learn, keeping up to date with the latest medical journals and practices. He collaborated on top-quality research and sought to bring the latest innovations to the New Brunswick Heart Centre. Sohrab took his role as an educator seriously and enjoyed teaching not only his medical students and residents but students as young as elementary school. Bringing his children to the Cath Lab and sharing his passion with them, was one of his greatest joys.

Sohrab enjoyed sharing knowledge, even bringing a cow’s heart to his children’s classes, so that they too could know the anatomy of the heart and the circulatory system. This medical grant is a wonderful way to honour Sohrab.

Sohrab was a team player. He acknowledged those who worked with him in all their roles, as nurses, research assistants, and fellow colleagues. We think he would be honoured knowing this grant will help fuel the passion for education in the next generation. This grant is in his spirit as it supports many various disciplines that are necessary to provide quality medical care."

Family of Dr. Sohrab Lutchmedial

"My father was very hardworking, smart and driven, and these are all great assets in the medical field. What really defined who he was, was his compassion, kindness, and care for everyone. Growing up he always taught me that everyone is worthy of love and kindness no matter who they are, what they look like or where they come from.

He emphasized the importance of expressing individuality and encouraged spaces that were judgment free and comfortable for everyone. He was always very involved in my life and became a role model not only for me but for other children in the community.

For example, helping pursue an all-females hockey team so younger girls could enjoy the sport, feel comfortable and included. When I would visit him at work, I would notice that he always knew his patients by name, engaged in conversation beyond small talk, and made sure everyone felt comfortable and welcome.

This grant brings comfort to me knowing that the healthcare system will continue to push for equality in patient care and will continue to make medical centers a safe space for everyone."

Miriam Lutchmedial, daughter of Dr. Sohrab Lutchmedial

"My dad supported me through every endeavour I chose to pursue, no matter what it was. With this scholarship, I can feel great comfort in knowing that he’s able to support so many others in learning about a field he was so passionate about.

My father knew he was in a very professional field, yet he still tried to have as much fun with it as possible. When he competed in the Medical Dragons Den, He and his team came up with this elaborate skit to help pitch their ideas. He had me help experiment with some of the special effects that went into the video, and I remember thinking to myself “Wow, this is not at all what I thought a medical pitch could be like”.

He really loved his profession and chose to perfect his craft, and build up his community, but still have as much fun with it as possible along the way. This is how I will remember him and hope others do too."

Jonah Lutchmedial, son of Dr. Sohrab Lutchmedial

"Dr. Lutchmedial was a champion of evidence-based guidelines and the research that drives outstanding clinical practice.

Sohrab believed in creating opportunities for innovation and the need for a diverse healthcare team to leverage their unique expertise, lived experiences, or vision. This scholarship will embody that spirit to inspire a new generation of champions."
